Check your battery health first

Hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar, or go to System Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. Normal means you are fine. Service Recommended means the battery has degraded past 80% of its original capacity. You can also check cycle count under System Information, Power. Over 1,000 cycles and battery life complaints usually go together.

Signs it is time

• Battery drains from full to empty in two or three hours of light work.
• MacBook shuts down before the percentage reaches zero.
• Trackpad feels stiff or clicks poorly. A swelling battery sits right under it.
• The bottom case bulges or the MacBook rocks on a flat table.
• macOS shows Service Recommended.

The swollen battery warning, again

This one matters more on MacBooks than phones. The battery sits directly beneath the trackpad and keyboard deck. When it swells it pushes them upward, and left long enough it can warp the top case or crack the trackpad. If your trackpad suddenly feels wrong or the case will not sit flat, stop charging it and bring it in.
